The creation of femininity uses imagery to bring about the struggles of women. It uses embroidery; an art associated with women to point out issues in the womenââ¬â¢s lives. It explores the existence of gender roles deeply engraved in the society. This is a mentality fostered right from the family level when one is growing up until adulthood (Parker 3). There seems to be a struggle amid the men who are so keen to maintain the status quo and the women who are out to assert their rightful position in the society (Parker 2). Speaking through Cloth: Teaching Hmong History and Culture through Textile Art by McCall also looks at the oppression of women. The art work produced by women in their culture portrays their lives, struggles, and the plight to the world (McCall 235). We can see the unfair treatm ent of women through exploitation of their work by getting half the price their work fetches. We also get to see how the boys are favored to acquire education while the girls are supposed to remain at home to engage in embroidery work (McCall 231). It is evident that the embroidery is a complex form of art. Women try to assert their place in society by creating pieces of art that speak volumes about the need to be recognized. The struggle seems far from over, but they are determined to keep on despite the numerous hurdles placed on their way by a male dominated
